This consists of a three items: a cooling coil unit (CCU), a heating coil unit (HCU) and a drive fan. The CCU and HCU both operate in a similar fashion, air is passed across fins (rather like a car radiator) that are either internally cooled with chilled water from a central chilled water plant or heated by low pressure hot water from a central boiler plant. The amount of air cooling or heating is affected by the flow rate of chilled or hot water through the CCU or HCU respectively. Flow rate is controlled by valves, the positions of which are established by PID controllers, the feedback signal for both CCU and HCU controllers comes from a temperature sensor situated in the return air duct. 3.2.2 The Manufacturing Area (Room). This is the area in which the temperature and relative humidity are controlled to suit the manufacturing process stage. Note that the volume of air returned to the AHU from the room is less than that delivered to the room. This is a result of the requirement for the room to be at a greater pressure than its surrounding areas (corridors, airlocks etc), to prevent the ingress of dust particles or other contaminates. The shortfall in air returned from the room is made up with fresh-air (from outside) at the mixing section. 3.2.3 Mixing Section Here air from the room is mixed with a smaller portion of fresh-air for the reason stated above, as well as to reoxygenate the air cycling around the room for operator comfort. The amount of fresh-air accounts for between 10% and 20% of the total air returned to the AHU. At ADC this will have been pre-treated by a central HVAC fresh-air plant to remove disturbances caused by changes in external conditions. 3.2.4 Dehumidifier.
